5th June 2024Bord na Móna
Bord na Móna is a commercial semi-state company that has served Irish communities for nearly 90 years. Over the past decade, as a result of the company’s “Brown to Green” Strategy, the organisation has embarked on a significant journey from being Ireland’s largest fossil fuel producer to becoming the leading renewable energy and climate solutions company it is today.
This transformation will ensure that the company and its employees will continue to deliver for Irish communities, by supporting Ireland’s transition to benefit from a carbon neutral, sustainable future.
In facing the climate crisis of today, including energy market volatility, and security of supply issues, Bord na Móna has enhanced its ambition to accelerate delivery of renewable energy infrastructure in order to support the delivery of the State’s decarbonisation targets for 2030 and beyond.
In 2023, Bord na Móna completed its “Brown to Green” transition and is now fully focused on delivering renewable energy projects, developing low carbon enterprises, peatlands restoration, carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation and sustainable waste management.
In the 2023 financial year (FY23), Bord na Móna reported a record operating profit of €95.2 million, up from €78.9 million in the prior year, with Profit after Tax of €100.9 million. This was driven by the accelerated shift into low-carbon activities and the strong performance across the Bord na Móna business, but particularly by its renewable energy portfolio which grew by 35% in FY23 versus the previous year. The growth in the company’s business means that it is now one of Ireland’s leading producers of green electricity, with a 15% share of Ireland’s renewable electricity market.
Bord na Móna’s ongoing €2.7 billion investment programme includes inter alia infrastructure development to increase production capacity from wind, solar, biomass, biogas and green hydrogen. This ambitious programme has already seen the company achieve a wonderful milestone at the end of the last reporting year (FY23), with its renewable electricity assets, including its joint venture projects, surpassing over 1,000,000 MWh of clean electricity generated for the very first time.
Bord na Móna’s renewable energy business is playing a key role in the company’s decarbonisation journey. The end of peat harvesting accelerated the development and expansion of the renewables business to the point that within a few short years Bord na Móna is now one of the leading renewable energy companies in Ireland, significantly contributing to Ireland’s energy security.
This success would not have been possible without Bord na Móna’s employees, a growing workforce who are energised by a shared mission to deliver climate solutions that support Ireland’s economic and social progress. It is an increasingly diverse workforce, supported by an inclusive culture where employees are encouraged to engage, develop, and thrive.
By 2024, 99% of the electricity the company produces will come from renewables as a result of many more ambitious achievements being delivered.
